It was an essentially liberal document, and the opposition of slaveholder conservatives like Henry and George Mason (who feared, correctly, it would eventually lead to the abolition of slavery) was earned. Anti-constitutionalism of Trump-Eastman GOP goes right back to this.

Of course the original 1856 Republican party was the most radical-left organization ever to reach US government, devoted to huge infrastructure development, increased immigration, free college for working men, and more. Sad things happened when it turned pro-rich after 1876.
