This is something I started contemplating in July that's really starting to come into focus, and I'd never quite finished the story:
A thing people aren't realizing: Congress has NOT been voting to raise the debt ceiling over the past 8 years. McConnell made them vote to "suspend" it. There is actually no debt ceiling right now (until the current suspension expires at the end of the month). Which means...

It actually expired end of July, October is when Treasury runs out of short-term fixes. https://t.co/vyzPGOys0D

Which means...
Of course if President Manchin allowed it, they could use two simple majority votes to (1) exempt debt ceiling legislation from filibuster and (2) vote to abolish the stupid debt ceiling forever. There's a very very faint hope this might happen. Clap your hands if you believe.

Or alternatively
This should do it https://t.co/zrGESSgymO via @intelligencer

In other Twitter news, I did something legitimately offensive that hasn't attracted any attention
It's so funny that you of all people think you're the expert on who is and who isn't a man. You're pushing 40 years old and your voice hasn't even changed.

and tried to explain to a friend, speaking of the debt ceiling, how hard it would be for Biden to do something illegal in terms of how hard it was even for Trump (who generally wanted to, as often as possible):
Because of those very constitutional obligations, Biden should issue an executive order lifting the debt ceiling. Shove it in McConnell's face and let the legal chips fall where they may.

they need an opinion, like from Office of Legal Counsel, arguing that it's actually not illegal. Like the peremptory deportation of Haitian asylum applicants over the last weeks, done under cover of a rationalization from Trump admin https://t.co/04oMyLJkFo

If Trump could grab Pentagon $$ allocated by Congress and put it into his wall, then I don't see why Biden couldn't do this for the debt. It might be stopped by a court, but that takes time and in the meantime accrued debts could be paid.
— david rubien (@dubiousraves) October 5, 2021
That was OK with Trump, obviously, since what he wanted was a declaration of victory over his enemies and a photo op. He didn't give a fuck about the wall. It's much more difficult for Democrats, who actually want to accomplish things.

One thing Trump understands is act now and worry later.

carrying out their own anti-immigration agenda that they'd been working on for years while Sessions was in the Senate, really succeeded in breaking the law for him, and that's because they wanted to, not because Trump did.

He got away with things the way he's done all his life, not by boldly doing them but by getting lawyers to cover his every move, and keeping everything tied up in court as long as possible, and daddies or mafia capos or (now) political donors to rescue him when the money ran out.
