That is, they think it's a way of giving a leg up to non-white people who aren't as good as white people. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Affirmative action is meant to find talented people at all levels whose talent is masked by systemic discrimination— Swami Vivi-ka-Newman (@Yastreblyansky) February 28, 2020
second-rate white people get an advantage over talented minority members, and it's not only unfair but bad for society as a whole. Affirmative action is meant to correct for those biases and make things better.— Swami Vivi-ka-Newman (@Yastreblyansky) February 28, 2020
You're saying that somebody NOT as good as Elizabeth Warren should have gotten consideration over her. That's not necessary. What's necessary is that talented people from minority groups should be identified. Warren didn't need that kind of help once she was done with law school.— Swami Vivi-ka-Newman (@Yastreblyansky) February 28, 2020
She wasn't competing with anybody from a minority group, she was competing with mostly white men in scholarship in the overlap between legal studies and economics, and she just did well. She was recognized (as researcher and teacher) and got really good gigs, ultimately Harvard.— Swami Vivi-ka-Newman (@Yastreblyansky) February 28, 2020
I hope they find her (and I'm sure she exists), but in the meantime Warren's scholarly work, which has led to the struggle for bankruptcy reform over the damage done by Biden's faction, and the CFPB, and her Senate seat, has benefited everybody.— Swami Vivi-ka-Newman (@Yastreblyansky) February 28, 2020
(Maybe it was Joe Biden's problem, and one of the things I can love about him was the way he learned to recognize that Barack Obama was better than him, at thinking and writing and at doing politics.)— Swami Vivi-ka-Newman (@Yastreblyansky) February 28, 2020
And she absolutely needed to apologize and learn what was wrong with it. But the lesson we need to learn is not to punish her (let's punish Trump, for his gross attacks on Native Americans when he was horning into the casino business and using "Pocahontas" as an insult).— Swami Vivi-ka-Newman (@Yastreblyansky) February 28, 2020
Let's stop Republicans in all three branches of government from fighting affirmative action and try to make sure those Native American women who are as good as Elizabeth Warren get found and placed where they belong, because we really need all of them.— Swami Vivi-ka-Newman (@Yastreblyansky) February 28, 2020
